Score Your Turkey

Step 1:  Using a certified scale, weigh your bird in decimals.  If the scale is in ounces, convert the ounces to decimals.

             Example: 20 lbs 10 oz = 20.625 lbs

Step 2:  Measure each spur along the outside center from the point which the spur protrudes from the leg to the tip of the spur.  Then

multiply each spur length times 10.

             Example: Spur 1 = 1.50 inches --- 1 4/8 inches x 10 = 15.000 inches

                             Spur 2 = 1.25 inches --- 1 2/8 inches x 10 = 12.500 inches

                             Total Spur length = 15.000 inches + 12.500 inches = 27.500 inches

Step 3:  Measure the beard from the center of the protrusion to the tip of the longest hair.  Then multiply the length times 2.

             Example: Beard = 7 inches --- 7.000 inches x 2 = 14.000 inches

** For non-typical turkeys (turkeys with more than one beard, measure each beard this same way and add them together.

Step 4:  Add the weight, spur length and beard length together.

             Example: 20.625 + 27.500 + 14.000 = 62.125
